Mostly dry second half of the weekend with light showers back for the start of the work week! - Q13 FOX (Seattle)

dry.indah.link

The first of May delivering showers and sun breaks throughout most of Saturday. Highs only reaching the upper 50s, a few degrees cooler than our average for this time of year.

Tonight expect convergence zone showers to fall apart. Lows fall into the mid 40s.

Tomorrow, just a couple of light sprinkles otherwise we are dry with partly sunny skies as a week ridge builds in making for a nice day.  Highs land in the low 60s.

Light rain returns to kick off the first Monday of May as a weak front passes through the region.  Temperatures will cool off some with this system, dropping back into the mid 50s.  Another convergence may set up leaving a few lingering showers into Tuesday morning, otherwise the day is very pleasant with high in the mid 60s.

As a ridge moves onshore Wednesday our Cinco De Mayo weather turns warm and dry. Highs will land 10+ degrees above average for many areas around the area.

The rest of the week features passing, light showers and sunbreaks with highs dropping to near normal of 61 for this time of year.

Have a great night! ~Erin Mayovsky, Q13 Forecaster

Dry Tomorrow; Storms Return Late Sunday/Sunday Night - alabamawx.com

dry.indah.link

QUIET AFTERNOON: Most of Alabama is rain-free this afternoon… but we do note a few isolated showers over West-Central Alabama, and a cluster of heavier showers over Mobile Bay. We have filtered sunshine through high cirrus clouds, and temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper 70s. The average high for Birmingham on April 30 is 78.

THE WEEKEND: Tomorrow will be a dry day statewide; with a mostly sunny sky we expect a high between 77 and 80 degrees. Then, on Sunday, clouds will increase during the day, and a few showers could reach the northern and western counties by mid to late afternoon. An organized batch of rain and storms will arrive Sunday night; SPC maintains a “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe thunderstorms near the Mississippi border, with a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) as far east as Moulton, Vance, Pine Hill, and Gulf Shores.

Instability will be limited… the main threat with the storms Sunday night will come from gusty winds and small hail.

NEXT WEEK: Wet, unsettled weather is the story for Alabama Monday through Thursday. Understand there will be some good breaks in the rain, and the sun will break out at times, but there will be some risk of showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis. Along the way the rain could be heavy at times, and one or two rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms are possible. But, it is still too early to define the specific timing of the heaviest rain and strong storms. Rain amounts between Sunday and Thursday will be in the 3 to 5 inch range for much of the state, some flooding issues could very well develop.

Drier air pushes into the state Thursday night, and for now Friday (May 7) look rain-free. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1924: A significant tornado outbreak occurred from Alabama to Virginia on the 29 through the 30th. 26 tornadoes were of F2 intensity or greater. A total of 111 people were killed, and over 1,100 injured. An estimated F4 tornado tore through Steedman and Horrell Hill, SC. This tornado killed 55 people.

ON THIS DATE IN 1953: An F4 tornado 300 yards in width leveled homes on the north side of Warner-Robins Georgia, and barracks on the south side of the Warner-Robins Air Force Base. 19 people were killed and were 300 injured. Estimated damage was $15 million.

High and Dry — High Country News – Know the West - High Country News

dry.indah.link

In response to “High and Dry” (March 2021), I agree, our water crisis in the West is terrifying.  However, to me, what’s truly terrifying, is that we’ve known this for decades. HCN does a wonderful job of reporting on the crisis, yet we never change. We continue to use far too much water, mainly because we are trying to support far too many people in an arid environment that can’t handle it. And, to make it worse, we waste at least half of that water with our lawns, pools, golf courses and long showers. We regard farmers as competitors for water, when they are using it to grow our food. Isn’t it time to start thinking about long-term population control and reduction, instead of accepting continued growth as “business as usual”? Is our own insanity going to take us down, or are we going to start actually doing something about our overpopulation?

Dry, hot conditions could fuel weekend wildfires, but have aided in some farmers' planting schedules - WKOW

dry.indah.link

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- It's dry outside, and this weekend it will be warm and windy -- perfect conditions for wildfires.

The DNR says the conditions will be "critical," but for some, the dry conditions have actually been a big help -- though that help could start to hurt if rain doesn't come soon.

The DNR says 98 percent of wildfires are caused by people.

"The only other cause is going to be lightning," said Wisconsin DNR Wildfire Specialist Catherine Koele. "(Saturday), with those gusty winds, we're anticipating that fire activity could definitely pick up."

A nice weekend can turn not so nice quickly if fires get out of control. Koele says to avoid bonfires, keep campfires small and be careful on opening fishing weekend.

"Even something as simple as dragging your chains from a boat trailer along the side of a road in dry ground can cause a fire," she said.

These dry conditions are proving helpful, though, in an unexpected place.

"That's the thing about farming," said Doug Rebout. "Every year is different. Every day is different on the farm."

Rebout is on the board of directors for both the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association and DATCP, and he also runs his family's farm on the outskirts of Janesville.

He says they finished planting Friday -- 3500 acres in just eight days, the fastest they've ever done.

Rebout says that speed was thanks to some new equipment, but also how dry the ground is.

"Every year, every farmer has those wet spots that they have troubles getting into," he said. "Whereas this year, we were able to go through everything and get everything planted."

Rebout says that help from Mother Nature will start to hurt if rain doesn't return soon.

"The problem is, if there's enough moisture to make that plant germinate, that seed germinate, and then it starts coming up and you get that continued drought, that seed will just die in the ground and not come up," he said. "And then we'll have to come back in at a later date and replant everything."

For Rebout, the dry conditions aren't a crisis yet -- just something to keep an eye on.

"Rain now would be great for us to help all that seed get started," he said.

Off the farm, however, the need for rain is more urgent to fight wildfires.

"We need some rain," Koele said. "A good, soaking rain."

Koele says people who start or see a wildfire should dial 911 immediately.

There are 5 air tankers in the state of Wisconsin, as well as two Blackhawk helicopters from the Army National Guard on standby to help fight wildfires this weekend.

How to Dry Clean at Home - DIY Dry Cleaning With or Without a Kit - GoodHousekeeping.com

dry.indah.link

Some clothes are easier to care for than others. Most everyday items can be cleaned with a quick wash and dry, however, "dry clean only" and delicate garments require more TLC. While it's always best to leave the dry cleaning and pressing up to the professionals, you may be tempted to skip the extra trip and dry clean at home.

This, of course, begs the question: Can dry cleaning really be done at home? Even though there are a number of ways to remove stains, wrinkles and odors from "dry clean only" clothes (more on that below), there is no way to actually dry clean at home, according to Carolyn Forte, Director of the Cleaning Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute. Professionals are able to remove stubborn body oils and stains that at-home dry cleaner kits and steaming are unable to. "Dry cleaning at home may delay bringing something to the dry cleaner and give you a few more wears, but it will not totally eliminate the need for it," she explains.

Maybe you have a whole season's worth of clothes to dry clean and don't want to stomach the high price tag. Or maybe you're not a fan of how your clothes smell when you bring them home. Forte offers up a simple solution: Keep searching until you find a dry cleaner that meets your needs or find an alternative (but highly effective) solution like wet cleaning or liquid carbon dioxide cleaning.

How to Refresh "Dry Clean Only" Items at Home

If you want to extend a garment's life between dry cleanings, you have two options: use a dry cleaning kit or take the DIY method.

Dry cleaning kits like Dryel's At-Home Dry Cleaner Starter Kit come with everything you need for a similar dry cleaning experience at home: a stain remover, bag, cleaning clothes and an odor and wrinkle releaser. Here's how to get the most effective refresh:

  1. Treat stains with the stain removing pen and spray high-odor areas with the odor releaser spray.
  2. Stick up to five garments in the bag with the cleaning cloth and tumble in the dryer. The heat and tumbling of the dryer activates the cleaning cloth, releasing trapped odors and freshening the fabric.
  3. Remove the clothes promptly and get rid of any remaining wrinkles or odors with the spray.

No kit, no problem: Follow these steps to spruce up your "dry clean only" items:

  1. Remove stains from garments. Just to be safe, test the stain remover on a hidden spot of the fabric and look for water spotting or color loss. Fibers like silk and rayon may be damaged by at-home stain removal products.
  2. Freshen fabrics, remove wrinkles and get rid of unwanted odors with a garment steamer like Seal star Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Garment Steamer or a spray like Downy Wrinkle Releaser. Always test the products on a hidden spot of the fabric first.
  3. Some fabrics, like knits and other lightweight fabrics, can also be de-wrinkled in the dryer. Stick your items in a wash bag and add a wet washcloth, hand towel or ice cubes to dryer to speed up the process.

Remember: This is only a placeholder until your next visit to the dry cleaner. There's no other way to really make your garments look and smell like new.
