After a cooler and dry Tuesday, active weather returns - Minnesota Public Radio News

The weather remains dry and comfortable Tuesday, then rain chances increase and temperatures climb into the weekend.

Tuesday’s forecast

Minnesota started briskly again Tuesday, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s to start the day. The Twin Cities dropped to a low of 54, which was the coolest morning since June 13 when the temperature was 53 degrees.

Under mostly sunny skies, much of the state will warm into the mid or upper 70s by afternoon.

This is just slightly below average for early August. Winds remain light and humidity also remains low through the day Tuesday.

Chances for rain return

Already by early Wednesday a disturbance starts moving into the state bringing showers and storms across the state Wednesday, then possibly lingering in southern Minnesota Thursday.

For the Twin Cities, the mostly likely timing of rain is Wednesday afternoon and evening. Any activity currently looks scattered, and the risk for severe weather is low.

Rain totals will be light, under one-quarter inch most places, with slightly higher totals in southern Minnesota where rain could linger longer.

After that disturbance clears, a few more rounds of unsettled weather move across the state from Friday to Sunday, bringing scattered showers and storms, but also plenty of dry breaks.

Some storms over the weekend could bring heavier rain. We will update that precipitation forecast as the weekend approaches.

Temperatures climb

The disturbance that moves through Wednesday also shifts our wind flow back out of the south. That southerly flow draws warmer, more humid air back across Minnesota.

Temperatures climb over the next few days, with most of the state back in the 80s by Friday.  Here is that temperature trend for a few locations around the state:

Humidity also climbs, and by Saturday, southern Minnesota will likely see some very sticky dew points back in the 70s.

Overnight lows also warm, with most of the state seeing lows in the 50s by Wednesday, and more widespread 60s by Friday.
