NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - More hot weather is expected over the next few days into the weekend and next week as a building ridge of high pressure will lead to hot and mainly dry conditions across the area over the next week.
Thursday night could see some isolated strong storms across the area as a disturbance rotates over the top of a ridge of high pressure to our west. This disturbance could bring in some high-based severe storms across western Nebraska Thursday evening with large hail and damaging wind gusts as the primary threats. Most of the area is covered by a marginal risk for severe weather by the Storm Prediction Center.
Into the day on Friday, mostly sunny skies with more above average temperatures are expected across the area. Look for afternoon highs reaching well into the 90s for most of western Nebraska, including into the middle 90s for North Platte.
Chances for rain should go by the wayside Friday into the weekend as the ridge of high pressure builds into the area. This will generally lead to hot and dry conditions not only through the weekend, but into the week next week where we can expect to see temperatures in the mid to possibly upper 90s at times with very spotty chances for rain.
One other thing to consider over the next few days is the potential for wildfire smoke from California and the western U.S. to filter into the area. This could lead to temperatures being a degree or two cooler than expected as well potentially impacting air quality across the area.
