Subtle jump in humidity as skies remain dry Labor Day - WDBJ7

The weekend finishes up with clear skies and very comfortable temperatures. Highs Sunday reached the low 80s once again with tolerable humidity for this time of year. Look for generally clear skies tonight with lows slipping to the low/mid 50s once again.

GREAT NIGHT FOR STARGAZING

Mars will be the bright object right next to the moon late this evening. Mars will continue getting brighter. Currently, it is the 5th-brightest celestial object to light up the sky, after the sun, moon, Venus and Jupiter, respectively. However, by late September, Mars will match Jupiter in brilliance and will get even brighter in October. Bright Jupiter and it’s less notable neighbor Saturn will be visible into next week in the southern sky

MONDAY

Sunny and comfortable conditions continue into Labor Day (Monday). The one notable part of the forecast you may feel is the slight uptick in humidity by the afternoon. Even then, it’s still much more pleasant than the past few weeks. Afternoon highs slowly rise Monday in the 70s to mid 80s.

TUESDAY

Very subtle weather changes are expected during the daylight hours Tuesday. Skies turn partly cloudy with afternoon highs in the mid 80s. It will be a bit on the muggy side once again. Late Tuesday into Wednesday, a cut off low in the Midwest starts to gradually moved eastward at the same time a warm front moves in off the east coast. This will deliver increasing clouds and rain chances that go up starting Tuesday night.

Shower chances return by the middle of the week as a front moves along the coast.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY

A low pressure system off the coast will deliver a low-level easterly component to the wind and bring moisture off the Atlantic into the region in the form of increased humidity and available water to help produce showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon.

Any storms that develop could have high rainfall rates. Temperatures will be increasing both during the day and at night. Highs reach the mid 80s and lows in the 60s.

FRIDAY - SATURDAY - SUNDAY

We’ll watch for a cutoff low in the Midwest that will eventually get picked up by an approaching front arriving over the weekend. Until that front moves through early Sunday, look for muggy weather with scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday and Saturday, mainly during the afternoon and early evening. By Sunday, we should get a notable drop in humidity and temperatures.

TROPICS

The hurricane season is certainly an active one. The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor 4 areas for possible development through the next 5 days. Visit our hurricane center for the latest on the tropics.

It has been 24 years since a major hurricane (CAT 3+) made landfall along the east coast. Chief meteorologist Brent Watts takes a look back at Hurricane Fran in the Weather Wise Guy Podcast.
