You know you have been married a long time when you're excited about your weekend plans not including having to do laundry. I’m not going to lie. In our house my wife gets the pleasure of doing most of the laundry.
This is primarily because her laundry needs special attention. I have no idea which jeans are the ones that can be dried and which ones she insists on hang drying or being sent to the dry cleaners to be pressed. There are many layers of special instructions that she has for each one of her garments.
I, on the other hand, do man laundry. I have gotten better over the years. There was a time where I would just throw it all in there and the whites would turn a dingy gray. Now I know better and separate the whites, darks and colored clothes.
This still leaves the terrible chore of folding the laundry. My wife has developed the opinion that folding laundry is relaxing. I guess going through the same motions over and over lets her turn off her brain and just get it done. I, on the other hand, hate it and will set the clean laundry aside for as long as I have clean clothes still in the closet.
This means our cat will typically find the basket and make a bed out of it so all my undershirts and socks will have a nice layer of black and orange hair on it. Although Kalle Pearl Halloween will find the just taken out of the dryer warm clothes to lay in as well so I guess it doesn’t matter.
Yes, my daughter was 3 when that poor cat got her name. Thankfully, this weekend will be more about keeping the fire stoked than about laundry.
We have many people come to the cleaners after they have a laundry mishap for us to try and fix it for them. One of the ones we see the most is people accidentally washing a pen with their laundry.
This can be a potentially ruinous occasion depending on how concentrated the ink is. Sometimes we can get it all out and sometimes it is just too much in one spot. Many times, our customers will accidentally wash a dry clean only sweater, which usually will shrink it, especially if it has some sort of wool in it.
We can many times add steam to loosen the fibers up and reshape the garment to close to its original shape. We do this sometimes with jeans or pants that have shrunk in the length. You would be surprised how much additional length you can get out of a pair of jeans.
We have people whose only job is to sort the dry cleaning and check the pockets for any type of potentially hazardous items. I can honestly say just like many of our customers when I am doing my own laundry, I have missed the occasional red sock in my whites or pen in the pocket.
Thankfully, there are dry cleaners out there to help in these situations.
