ENFIELD, CT — Another small business in Enfield has apparently felt the pinch of restrictions brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, as E-Jay's Cleaners has posted signs in its windows indicating it is going out of business.
The dry cleaning business was founded at 167 Hazard Ave. in 1999. Owner Somon Doyle was very involved with the Enfield community, donating to numerous non-profit and benefit events over the years.
Enfield resident Patti Magnuson organized a Dress For Less event for several years, offering used formal and semi-formal gowns for far less than girls would normally pay for new outfits. She praised the cooperation she got from E-Jay's, which provided a dry cleaning certificate to anyone purchasing a dress at the event.
"That's too bad, another business gone due to COVID-19 related slowdowns," Magnuson said. "I went to them with a new idea and they totally helped me, both with partnering with me to provide vouchers and advertising the event."
Customers were lamenting the loss on social media pages.
"My husband went last week to drop off his shirts and was told they were closing their doors the next day," Cara Lavender wrote. "That's the second dry cleaner that's gone out of business that he's used since quarantine. It's so sad. People stay and work at home, they don't wear their dress clothes."
"Really enjoyed the professional way our clothes were cleaned and processed," Bill Strachan wrote. "Having tried others over many years, I found this establishment the best!"
Michelle DeLorge wrote, "What a shame. There are so many empty stores in Enfield, in the mall and the plazas."
Former Deputy Mayor Bill Lee said Julie Lai, owner of Julie's Laundromat on Enfield Street, "is working with the E-Jay's owners and is welcoming their customers."
