Unusually warm weather and another dry January has elevated fire danger throughout California.
A Red Flag Warning currently covers a large swath of Southern California. As of Thursday night, CAL FIRE was battling two wind-aided fires, the Erbes Fire in Ventura County and the Comet Fire in San Diego County.
Even Northern California is feeling the heat this coming weekend. Some Bay Area temperatures were climbing into the 70s beginning Saturday, right through the three-day weekend.
But it’s Southern California that has officials concerned.
Brian Marshall, a fire and rescue chief with Cal OES, explained that the agency pre-positioned fire strike teams in Ventura, Orange and Riverside counties with strong Santa Ana winds, warm temperatures and low relative humidity in the forecast.
"These warm, dry winds dry out the fuel even after we had a little bit of rain and this just sets us up for the potential of a wind-driven wildland fire," Marshall told KCBS Radio.
Assistant Santa Rosa Fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal said strong winds expected Sunday are likely to topple fire damaged trees. It’s a real threat, explained Marshall, with 4,000,000 acres blackened statewide last summer.
"The potential for these trees to come down is extreme," he said.
