Readers: Have you attempted Dry January this month? How’s it going? - Boston.com

After a year that seemed to stretch on forever, we are officially midway through a month that…has seemed to stretch on forever.

The U.S. is in the middle of another COVID-19 surge, and some people are reaching their breaking point. Unemployment claims have risen. Just last week, a violent mob of Trump supporters sieged the Capitol. President Trump was impeached a second time, and the FBI has warned of potentially violent protests at all 50 state capitols in the days leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. I repeat, it is still mid-January.

Meanwhile, we are also in the midst of Dry January, an annual challenge to give up alcohol for a month in an effort to kick off the new year with a clean slate. But after the events of Jan. 6 — and the news that Massachusetts is now at ‘severe outbreak’ status — the consensus among many prospective Dry January participants seems to be: We’re throwing in the towel.

What about you? Did you start the year with a plan to go alcohol-free for a month, only to decide that another, less frenetic time of the year might make more sense? Have you continued to abstain from alcohol and realized that not drinking at this time was keeping you more calm and grounded? We want to hear about your Dry January journey so far. Share your thoughts in the survey below, or e-mail us at [email protected].
