Monterey County to dry out, warm up by weekend - Monterey Herald

MONTEREY — Although Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Tuesday, predicting six more weeks of winter, the forecast for Monterey County calls for rain to move out of the region by late Wednesday and temperatures to increase this weekend.

“The weather’s going to change pretty dramatically for Thursday, Friday, Saturday to a dry pattern with complete sunshine and much warmer, with highs back up to the upper 60s,” said Ryan Walbrun, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “We could even see some 70s around the region.”

Before things dry out, another weak weather system will move into the area and bring light rain to the Monterey Bay area Wednesday.

“Expect, more so in the afternoon, some very light rain shower activity,” Walbrun said. “Nothing more than a few hundredths, perhaps up to a tenth of an inch (of rain).”

A weak system brought rain showers to the area Monday night into Tuesday. The preliminary data Tuesday afternoon showed .19 inches of rain fell at the Monterey Airport, .07 inches of rain in Salinas and as much as half an inch in the Santa Lucia Range above Big Sur.

According to Caltrans, crews continued to clean up Highway 1 in Big Sur after an atmospheric river event brought as much as 16 inches of rain to the higher elevations in the region.

“We’re responding to 60 locations in the corridor, doing a lot of rockslide cleanup, mud clean up, clearing drainage channels,” said Jim Shivers, a Caltrans spokesman.

Caltrans and contractor crews continue working north and south of Rat Creek on Highway 1 to clear multiple debris piles, remove accumulations of water and stabilize damaged sections of roadway that were impacted by storm damage. Shivers said several of these locations still need to stabilize and dry out before final cleanup and repair work can restore the highway to allow for public use.

Caltrans and Papich Construction, which was hired under a $5 million emergency contract last week, continue to assess the 150-foot chasm in the roadway at Post Mile 30.2 caused by the last week’s storms at Rat Creek, below the Dolan Fire burn scar.

“The assessment period continues with the emergency contractor, we don’t have any timetable just yet,” Shivers said. “There is no definitive plan for what the structure will look like.”

Monterey County Supervisor Mary Adams, whose district includes Big Sur and other areas damaged by the atmospheric river event, thanked emergency responders during Tuesday’s board meeting for their work following the damaging wind and rain event.

“I saw many of you cleaning roads and I also saw you wading through the flooded areas over by the (Carmel) Lagoon and I know you worked late hours to get this work done,” she said.

Adams said county staff is working hard to clean up the storm damage, adding that she took a trip to see the chasm where Highway 1 washed out, calling it “a big, giant hole” in the roadway. Highway 1 remains closed at South Coast Center about 34 miles north of the San Luis Obispo County line in the north and at Willow Creek Road about 11 miles north of the San Luis Obispo County line in the south.

While Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, which connects Highway 1 to Highway 101 through the Santa Lucia Range, remains closed due to damage during the Dolan Fire, Adams said crews are working to clear the road and provide Big Sur residents with another way to make it out and pick up supplies.

Walbrun said wet weather is expected to return to the region next week but no damaging wind or rain is currently in the forecast.

“The early signs are that we cool down and we probably won’t get too much rain down here but there are some hints that, as we get to the end of next week, that the pattern could get at least a little bit active,” he said. “But we don’t expect any storms like we saw early last week.”
