Pinpoint Weather: Dry pattern will yield to more wintry weather by Mid-Week
There is a noticeable feature in the sky on Monday afternoon, it is the sun. There is little in the way of cloud cover today until we get well into the night. The mercury in the thermometer is on the cool side with high temps in the upper 30s to low 40s most locations. The solar energy is doing a good job of melting whatever snow is left on the ground and if we do dip below freezing in some higher elevated locations there may be some street ice form (black ice). This will not by any means be a widespread problem, just some of the higher elevated locations. Most roads should be dry.
Tuesday will see a quick shot of light rain arrive in the morning over our eastern Piedmont counties of Halifax, Charlotte and Appomattox that will make roads wet but nothing major is expected. The mountains may see a few snow showers in the afternoon, but the overall theme for the Roanoke Valley and most locations east of the divide will be a mix of clouds and sunshine along with very mild air. Highs will be in the 50s most spots Tuesday.
Looking ahead to the middle of the week there is a chance for another round of rain and snow mixed. This will be a result of the general pattern for this season of a storms tracking along the south and moving across the Carolinas. There will be rain and snow mixed and we will see the regional temperatures dropping. Highs will be in the 30s and 40s the rest of the week and we may be dealing with rain and snow off and on until Friday.
Friday may bring a bit of a dry pattern for us, but some models are still keeping the wintry mix in the forecast. Those that are keeping the mix in for Friday bring a good deal of freezing rain to the area. This is the dangerous side of wintry weather as it can cause major power outages and very dangerous icy roads and sidewalks. The models that keep the mix in on Friday have us quiet over the weekend. Those that have us dry on Friday have an icy Sunday. So, needless to say the models are once again all over the place. Time will tell, but we will keep you in the loop with our updates on air and on line.
