Although Germany is famous for some of the world’s best sweet and off-dry riesling, it’s also home to delicious drier styles of wine made from this noble grape. In fact, the popularity of German dry riesling, classified as trocken, has grown significantly over the years and now makes up one-third of Germany’s total production of quality wine, according to the New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia. The following are two fine examples.
Leitz 2018 Eins Zwei Dry 3, Riesling Trocken, Rheingau, Germany
Bought • Wine and Cheese Place, 7435 Forsyth Boulevard, in February for $15.99
Description • Leitz, one of the top estates in the Rheingau, is operated by Johannes Leitz, whose family has been making wine since 1744. Although this is the winery’s entry-level dry riesling, it offers an amazing amount of finesse and elegance for an affordable price. Invitingly aromatic, this delicate white is crisp, lively and complex, tasting of stone fruit, apples and zesty lime with a touch of spice. It has a brisk acidity and ends with a long, pure finish. It would be great with oysters and other seafood as well as smoked salmon.
Von Winning 2018 Winnings Riesling, Pfalz, Germany
Bought • Wine and Cheese Place, 7435 Forsyth Boulevard, in February for $15.99
Description • This charming riesling comes from the highly regarded Von Winning winery that was founded in 1849. Although the Winnings riesling does not carry the trocken classification, it’s just a little sweeter than the Eins Zwei Dry. While it leans toward the dry side, it’s not bone dry and tastes of juicy stone fruit with a touch of honey and spice. Aromatic and extremely easy to drink, this white has a snappy acidity and ends with a mouthwatering citrus finish. It’s a perfect pair with spicy Asian cuisine.
