Spring has arrived, and we all are going to be pushing to get outdoors more than ever. Auburn Road Vineyards in Pilesgrove is not just a great destination for spending some time outdoors tasting its lineup of wines crafted by winemaker/co-owner Julianne Donnini, but for stocking up on its delicious and popular dry rosé.
The label, designed by artist Carolyn Mortimer, evokes spring, depicting a splash of budding flowers. It feels like an invitation to enjoy the winery’s offerings al fresco. Mortimer’s artwork first appeared on the walls of the tasting room, but Jules, as she is known to everyone, and her business and life partner Scott Donnini, were so moved by her artistry that she has become the principal designer of their labels. Her artwork also is no longer just hanging on the walls of the tasting room, it is painted on them, creating the impression of having a space that moves seamlessly from outdoors to in.
The other thing that jumped out to me was that the Auburn Road Provence-style dry rosé is made principally from Sangiovese. The backbone grape in Chianti, you would expect to find it growing in the rolling hills of Tuscany and not in the Outer Coastal Plain of New Jersey. It is a grape that not only makes for resonant red wines, but fantastic flavorful rosés, too.
The wine in the glass really ties it all together. A beautiful color, this rosé has lovely citrus and strawberry flavors and a pleasingly long and dry finish. It is great for pairing with food from the winery’s European–style wine bar, or for sipping as you walk the grounds. The Auburn Road Dry Rosé is a perennial favorite, and with only 500 to 600 cases made, it usually sells out by harvest time (and it currently is sold out online), so plan that road trip soon. If it’s restocked online, you’ll find it here for $21.
