The weather pattern is going to change here in Michigan, at least for a week. It’s been a dry winter, and early spring. This next week will bring at least four rounds of rain across much of Michigan.
The first rain comes in the form of very spring-like showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. There is even a very slight chance of a quick severe wind gust in a thunderstorm or two. This afternoon’s rain will be in the warm sector ahead of the cold front, so it will be a very spring-like situation.
The next rain will be spurts of off-and-on showers, and even thundershowers on Friday. Friday could have a shower at any time, but the late afternoon and evening is again favored for the highest chance of rain.
Here’s the total rainfall by Friday evening. It shows various streaks of heavier rain in thunderstorms.
Then a new storm system forming along the Gulf of Mexico will take a track almost straight northward, and track right over Michigan Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. This storm system will have widespread solid rain with it. Most of Michigan will pick up one-half inch to one inch of rain with Saturday night’s rain.
Here’s the total rain expected by the time we get to Sunday evening.
Finally, behind that Gulf of Mexico storm will come cooler “wrap-around” showers. These are the occasional showers on the west side of a storm after it passes east of Michigan. Those wrap-around showers will bring spurts of rain from Sunday into Monday.
By the time we get to next Tuesday, Michigan won’t be super dry on the surface. We need this rain, and it should set us up for having some moisture for the start of the growing season.
In fact, the extended forecasts from 10 days out to 15 days out call for drier than normal weather. After these next five days of wet weather, we should get a break. That’s when you’ll want to be ready to get some early plantings in the garden.
