James Spann forecasts a mostly dry start for the Alabama weekend from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.
DRIER TODAY: Clouds continue to blanket Alabama early this morning, but the big rain mass associated with the remnant circulation of former Tropical Storm Beta has moved out of the state. Clouds will linger this morning, but some sun could break through this afternoon as drier air creeps in. The high today will be between 74 and 78 degrees. The average high for Birmingham on Sept. 25 is 82.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be warm and dry; with a partly to mostly sunny sky, we expect a high in the mid 80s. On Sunday expect a mix of sun and clouds, and will we will bring in a chance of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet Sunday is 30-40%, and the high will be between 82 and 85 degrees.
NEXT WEEK: A cold front will approach Monday. It won’t be an all-day rain, but occasional showers are a good possibility statewide, with highs around 80. The southern two-thirds of the state will be dry and cooler Tuesday, but we will mention a chance of some patchy, light rain over the northern counties as a deep upper trough swings through. The rest of the week will feature sunny, pleasant days and clear, cool nights with highs mostly in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Cooler spots will see 40s during the early morning hours toward the end of the week.
LONGER RANGE: The latest outlook from the Climate Prediction Center suggests temperatures could be well below average across Alabama and the Deep South Oct. 2-9. We could see our first light frost of the season for parts of north Alabama at some point during that time frame if the forecast verifies.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight, expect mostly fair and pleasant weather. Temperatures will fall slowly into the upper 60s.
Saturday, Auburn will host Kentucky at Jordan Hare Stadium (11 a.m. kickoff). Expect a partly to mostly sunny sky; temperatures will rise into the low 80s during the game.
Alabama travels to Columbia, Missouri, to take on Mizzou Saturday (6 p.m. kickoff). The sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from near 82 at kickoff through the 70s during the second half.
TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin; tropical storm formation is not expected through early next week. Hurricane season runs through the end of November.
ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Four hurricanes were spinning simultaneously in the Atlantic basin: Georges, Ivan, Jeanne and Karl. That was the first time this had happened since 1893. Georges would make its seventh and final landfall near Biloxi, Mississippi, on Sept. 28, 1998.
