Many of us are washing our hands more these days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and while it's not as harsh as hand sanitizer, it still dries out our skin. That’s according to Laura Luke, who practices dermatology in Utica.
“You’re using the water temporarily, but the water isn’t moisturizing your hands. It’s basically cleaning your hands, but that’s why it’s important for people with dry skin to moisturize after,” she said.

Jessica Loucks is a travel nurse who recently moved from Utica to Virginia. She knows sanitizing and hand washing dries out skin, but has to do both frequently due to her job.
“Hand sanitizing or washing your hands between each patient, it just takes a toll on your hands,” said Loucks.
Loucks also has a form of eczema.
“My hands feel dry to the point of swelling a little bit,” she said.
She wears gloves but said, “even when you wear gloves, you have to wash your hands before and after you take the gloves off.”
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for dry hands, but Luke has some tips. She suggests using bar soap instead of liquid soap to avoid chemicals that could cause allergic reactions.
She also recommends not using hot water when washing your hands, and when moisturizing, using creams over lotions. Loucks said she already moisturizes but using bar soap is something she’ll try at home.
“We are encouraged to take care of our hands because without our hands we can’t do our jobs but the reality is I can’t stop using hand sanitizer. I can’t stop washing my hands. So just have to go those extra miles,” said Loucks.
