Sony Pictures, having had great success with Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” over the Christmas 2019 holiday, had hoped to repeat its success with Melanie Laurent’s new WW2 drama “The Nightingale” and had scheduled the film initially for a Christmas 2020 release.
Elle and Dakota Fanning lead the cast of this adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s novel about two sisters who come together to survive and resist the German occupation of France.
The pandemic however shot the production’s schedule to hell and so filming didn’t begin until late October. As a result, the film was then pushed back to Christmas 2021, and now today the movie has been pushed again by an entire year to December 23rd 2022.
That’s not the only new date announcement today. IFC Films has picked up North American rights to Robert Connolly’s atmospheric mystery thriller “The Dry” starring Eric Bana. A May 21st theatrical and on-demand release is planned and follows in the wake of big local success in Australia.
Then there’s “Bad Trip,” the long-delayed hidden camera comedy starring Lil Rel Howery and Tiffany Haddish. At one point scheduled for 2019, the film got delayed several times and is now going straight to Netflix to debut March 26th.
Finally, the Michael Keaton-led and Obama-produced “Worth,” which follows lawyer’s Kenneth Feinberg’s fight for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, has been set for a release sometime in September via Netflix to time with the infamous terrorist incident’s 20th anniversary.
