So far through May 7, Waterloo is off to the 8th driest start to the year in history. This is the driest YTD from 1/1 to 5/7 since 1989. There has been 5.12" of precipitation behind the normal of 9.23". The driest year over this time period was 1958 at 4.08" and the wettest 17.28" in 2008.
Dubuque is also seeing its 8th driest year to date through May 7 at 6.47" for the year. The top spot belongs to 1958 at 5.31". This is the driest start since 2003.
In Cedar Rapids, this is the 12th driest year to date start through May 7 at 5.84". In first place - you guessed it - 1958 at 2.85". This is the driest start since 2018.
Iowa City has had a near normal year for precipitation.
Weather observer Danny Murphy says that his weather site in Stanley near Buchanan and Fayette counties is on its way to the driest December through May on record (since 2006).
The dry conditions have led to abnormally dry and moderate drought conditions across the area.
