Dry, sunny week ahead for Austin after historically wet start to June, forecasters say - Austin American-Statesman

June got off to a historically rainy start last week, but the outlook for the coming days has only minimal chances of rain along with higher temperatures that are more seasonable for this time of year.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport clocked 3.25 inches of rain in the first five days of June, making it the fifth-wettest start to the month since recordkeeping began at that location in 1943, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Monte Oaks.

Austin's main weather station at Camp Mabry reported 2.61 inches in the first five days, making it the eighth-wettest start to the month since the late 1890s, when the city's weather data was first collected.

Sunday stayed dry, ending a run of nearly a week of Austin getting doses of measurable rainfall. Temperatures also approached 90 degrees and got within a few degrees of the normal high of 92.

Starting Monday, residents can expect warmer temperatures and an overall pushback in the direction of normal Austin weather, according to weather service meteorologist Yvette Benavides Van Pelt.

Chances of rainfall will finally decline at the beginning of the workweek as an area of higher pressure starts to move in, she said. High pressure systems are clockwise-rotating masses of air that tend to keep clouds from forming. The current forecast indicates little to no chance of rain from Monday until the weekend.

"That'll kind of keep us dry and a bit warmer," Benavides Van Pelt said.

Austin will start the week with Monday in the upper 80s and low 90s, unlike last week's cooler than average temperatures brought on by more cloud cover. Air humidity will remain consistent, however, with a dew point still within the 70s keeping days muggy, she said.

In the meantime, the low pressure system that caused heavier rainfall will move east and northeast of Austin, Benavides Van Pelt said.

"I would expect it to be, once we start getting into the summer, it's going to be our typical south Central Texas heat," she said.

Monday has only a 20% chance of rain in the morning with temperatures hitting 90 degrees. But the muggy air will make it feel more like 101. Humid air from the Texas Gulf Coast will blow in from the south-southeast at 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as strong as 20 mph.

Tuesday through Friday will be sunny with temperatures in the low 90s.

The recent stretch of rainy days helped push Austin's cumulative rainfall amount above normal for the first time this year. The city's weather station at Camp Mabry has recorded 17.92 inches of rain in 2021. That's about 2 inches more than normal at this point in the year.

The Austin metro area continues to stay out of drought, according to U.S. Drought Monitor data from the National Drought Migration Center. No outdoor burn bans are in place for Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop or Caldwell counties, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

At Lake Travis, a popular destination for Central Texas boaters and swimmers, the water elevation Sunday was around 665.3 feet above mean sea level, which is 5.5 feet higher than the elevation two weeks ago, on May 23.

In Travis County, only the boat ramps at Camp Creek Park and Cypress Creek are closed because of low water levels.
