Tampa Bay won’t be dry this week. It won’t be that rainy, either. - Tampa Bay Times

It’s an annual tradition in Tampa Bay: As May turns to June, daily showers return to the region.

That is the forecast this coming week, with a chance of rain everyday through Saturday, said Spectrum Bay News 9 Meteorologist Diane Kacmarik. But dry air in the region should limit the number of downpours this week.

The dry air that’s expected to enter the region Monday will keep rain chances from eclipsing 30 percent Monday through Saturday, Kacmarik said. The lowest chance of rain will come on Wednesday, when it will be about 20 percent chance.

”We’re going to get into a pattern of dry air above starting Monday, lowering our rain chances,” Kacmarik said.

High temperatures, meanwhile, will remain in the low 90s all week, while lows bottom out at 75 degrees.

The chance of rain won’t be as strong as it is typically is in the second week of June, but bay area residents may be happy to get any rain at all in the coming days. The region is still recovering from a drier-than-usual May that briefly caused inland Hillsborough and Pasco counties to be classified as “abnormally dry” by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Tampa had less than a half-inch of rainfall throughout May. Five days into June, however, the gauge at Tampa International Airport has recorded 1.6 inches, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Close.

Close said most of the rain recorded in Tampa came from heavy showers on June 2, which helped relieve the parched lawns that hadn’t seen significant rainfall since April.

But not every part of Tampa Bay has been granted a wet reprieve. That includes downtown St. Petersburg, which has recorded just 0.02 of an inch to start June.

Why the lack of rain in the Sunshine City?

The city has just been unlucky, Close said. He pointed to St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport — just 12 miles north of downtown — as an example of how random the rain has been. The gauge there has recorded 1.1 inches this month already.
