A cold and dry New Year's Eve but rain and freezing rain later New Year's Day - WFMZ Allentown

dry.indah.link
SHORT TERM FORECAST

NEW YEAR’S EVE: Turning out partly cloudy and colder. Low: 22

NEW YEAR’S DAY: Becoming cloudy with rain and freezing rain later in the day, mixed with sleet at the onset. High: 38

FRIDAY NIGHT: Periods of rain, with lingering freezing rain in the higher elevations in the evening. Low: 33

FORECAST SUMMARY

The last day of 2020 started on a damp and dreary note, a weather microcosm of the year as a whole for many, as the final cold front of the year slowly slid south through the area. In its wake and in a rare bit of 2020 good luck, we’ll dry out nicely for New Year’s Eve with some clearing overnight as well. Granted, that will set up a colder night with light winds and clearer skies, as overnight temperatures drop deep down into the 20s. With some fresh cold air in place as our next round of wet weather approaches later Friday, expect some rain but also some freezing rain this time, most prolonged north of the Lehigh Valley where winter weather advisories are posted for ice accumulations. So it’s a wet start to the new year later Friday, and a third and final round of some rain (and wet snow for some) awaits for the second half of the weekend on Sunday. Thankfully, we’ll be able to tuck in a mild and dry Saturday in between with some 50-degree sunshine on Saturday. While it’s mostly rain for most of the area with these next two systems, we’ll watch for some icing with our Friday storm, especially along the Interstate 80 corridor. It’s the same area on Sunday where wet snow could factor in and provide some light accumulations. Quieter and some welcome drier weather should arrive early next week, with temperatures not hard to take for early January.

DETAILED FORECAST

NEW YEAR’S EVE

Evening clouds should begin to break up as skies trend partly to even mostly clear overnight. With light winds and clearing skies, cold temperatures in the low 20s will result. Come the ball drop around midnight, expect temperatures to be in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees, seasonably cold for late December but most importantly dry.

NEW YEAR’S DAY

Clouds will thicken back up on the first day of 2021 after a little early morning sunshine, with some rain arriving in the afternoon and evening, perhaps beginning as a little sleet. Some freezing rain is possible at the onset anywhere northwest of the Interstate 95 corridor, but it’s areas north of the Lehigh Valley, mostly along the Interstate 81 and 80 corridors, where icing will be more problematic and a few tenths of an inch of ice may accumulate on any colder surfaces. Expect around a half to three quarters of an inch of rain on average, with some spots perhaps as high as an inch. While certainly wet, the rain won’t be as heavy as back on Christmas Eve, and without the snow cover this time, the potential for flooding is much lower. Be wary of traveling in freezing rain though, especially Friday evening towards the Poconos and northwestern New Jersey.

SATURDAY

Clouds will break for some sunshine Saturday, certainly the better and milder weekend day with highs up around 50 degrees, perhaps with a little bit of a breeze at times.

SUNDAY

A fast moving and relatively weak low pressure along the coast will take a favorable track to ordinarily give us snow this time of year, but with the lack of cold air around, it’s another round of rain for most of us on Sunday. The exception will again be the Poconos and northwestern New Jersey, where a few inches of wet snow are possible with air just cold enough to support snow. Highs for everyone else will be close to 40 degrees.

NEXT WEEK

Monday through Wednesday look quiet with partly sunny skies, an occasional breeze, and highs in the low 40s, better than our average high for early January in the mid 30s. Our next chance for rain or wet snow would be Thursday night and Friday late in the week.

Dry to ring in 2021, but a wintry mix arrives Friday night - WESTERNMASSNEWS.com

dry.indah.link

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- We’ve got dry, cold weather on tap for New Year’s Eve across much of New England. Skies will gradually become clear tonight with lows falling into the upper teens to mid 20s by morning.

Friday begins with good sunshine and we see high clouds gradually increase throughout the day. Temperatures climb into the upper 30s and low 40s with a light and variable breeze.

Winter Weather Advisories have been issued ahead of our next storm system for Friday night through Saturday morning for all of western Mass. We are expecting a wintry mix that will likely lead to hazardous travel conditions for most.

Low pressure moving up from the southwest will bring precipitation to our area starting around 6-8pm. Precip should begin as light snow for many and that snow may accumulate to an inch or less in the lower valley and up to 3 inches in the Berkshires and Rt. 2 corridor. Warmer air in the mid-levels will move over colder air at the ground, changing snow over to sleet and freezing rain Friday night. Ice accumulations may reach up to a tenth of an inch for the valley before precip changes to plain rain. In the hill towns and Berkshires, ice amounts up to a quarter inch are possible. Rain and freezing rain will end Saturday morning from south to north.

Travel conditions should be worst overnight Friday into Saturday morning. Icy roads will become wet as the morning wears on-first in the valley, then eventually in the higher elevations. While we are not expecting a lot of power outages, for those in the hills who end up with a quarter inch of ice or more, isolated outages will be possible.

Dry weather returns Saturday evening and night, then clouds increase Sunday morning ahead of a developing coastal low. This storm system’s track and strength are still uncertain, but minor to moderate snow is looking possible for our area Sunday night into Monday morning. Once this system moves out, we remain fairly cloudy and seasonable Tuesday, then turn milder with more sunshine Wednesday and Thursday.

New Year’s Eve will be dry, but early 2021 will feature some unsettled weather - The Boston Globe

dry.indah.link

The final morning of 2020 brought showers to the region in a mild air mass for the end of December.

The weather will continue to be active as we start a new month and a new year. January represents the second month of meteorological winter; it’s also most often the coldest month of the year.

Even when temperatures get above average we can still experience wintery precipitation. This is going to be the case early Saturday and perhaps again late in the weekend.

New Year’s Eve itself will be dry and chilly, but not too cold.  Unfortunately with the lack of festivities this year, the ideal weather will kind of go to waste. If you want to do a sunrise walk on the first day of the New Year I say go for it, it will be bright and blue with an invigorating feeling to the air.

Weather System Number 1

Our first weather system of 2021 will head into the eastern Great Lakes. On this track, warmer air will be riding northward at the same time cold air is stuck at the surface. This is a recipe for frozen precipitation in the form of perhaps sleet or freezing rain.

I’m not expecting much but it doesn’t take a lot of ice to create real problems on the roads. The greatest risk for an issue will be north and west of Route 128 and especially across northern Massachusetts and into southern New Hampshire and portions of Maine.

A fast-moving weather system will bring rain to Boston, but a mixed bag further north and west on Saturday morning.
A fast-moving weather system will bring rain to Boston, but a mixed bag further north and west on Saturday morning.COD Weather

The timing of the system looks to affect southern New England through mid-morning on Saturday but will linger longer in northern New England, especially Maine, throughout the afternoon.

Skies will clear Saturday night and there will be a break in the action for Sunday. Temperatures will be slightly above average and that’s important as we have our next weather system arriving Sunday night into Monday.

Weather System Number 2

Milder than average weather is likely into mid-January.
Milder than average weather is likely into mid-January.NOAA

The second storm is going to be a coastal one. If we had cold air in place I would be expecting much more snow but because the air is relatively mild this should be primarily a rain event for Boston.

As you travel north and west of the city there is the chance for a mixed bag of precipitation. With this weather system, ice won’t be a factor. It will be a snow or rain situation.

After this storm departs dry weather will resume and conclude the first week of January. As of now, it looks like the cold air will remain locked across northern Canada keeping our area at or above average perhaps into the middle of the month after that we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Florida Man Lands in Jail After Using Fire Extinguisher to ‘Dry Off': Police - NBC 6 South Florida

dry.indah.link

A Florida man who wasn't on fire was arrested Tuesday night after police say he sprayed himself with a fire extinguisher in an attempt to dry himself off.

Florida State University police found David Mann, 54, on the top floor of a parking garage with an extinguisher and covered in powder, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.

Mann told police he had been drinking and fell asleep and then fell in water when he woke up. He said he was using the extinguisher to try to dry himself off, police said.

He was charged with interfering with firefighter equipment, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Mann was being held in the Leon County jail Wednesday night. Jail records do not list a lawyer for him.

Dry New Year’s Eve after snowy Tuesday - WGN TV Chicago

dry.indah.link

Ice accumulation combined with snow will make for extremely hazardous travel and outdoor activities across our area New Years Day. Another Winter Storm is expected to spread freezing rain and sleet across most of northern and central Illinois and Indiana Friday, changing over to accumulating 1 to 3-inches of snow before departing east. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from mid-morning Friday until late Friday evening for much of the Chicago area.

A deepening center of low pressure will move northeast out of Texas, tracking up the Ohio River Valley Friday, spreading rain to the north of the approaching system. With temperatures in our area hovering in the upper 20s and lower 30s, the precipitation falling here is expected to be primarily freezing rain and sleet initially Friday morning into the afternoon, mixing with and changing over to a wet snow and ending from the west later in the day Friday/Friday evening as the low pressure pulls away to the east.

Low and no alcohol beverages to get boost from dry January - Yahoo Sports

Sales of “no- and low-” alcohol drinks have received a boost from Dry January, and now a record number of Brits plan to partake in the challenge in 2021.

Alcohol Change UK, which started the Dry January campaign in 2013, said it's polling shows 6.5 million UK adults intend to take part next month — nearly double the 3.9 million who participated in 2020.

This equates to nearly a fifth of people in the UK who typically drink alcohol, the charity's data shows.

The very first Dry January only attracted 4,000 people, but has expanded since partnering with Public Health England to focus on health and alcohol behaviour change.

As a result, the number of non-alcoholic “alternatives” to spirits, wines and beers has increased significantly over the past few years.

This year, beer spirits producer Diageo — which owns Smirnoff, Captain Morgan, and Baileys, among other brands — invested US-based non-alcoholic “spirits” firm Ritual Zero Proof, with whom it has launched alcohol-free versions of its popular Gordon's gin under the Seedlip brand.

The beverage is already for sale in Tesco and on Amazon. It will be widely available in supermarkets from 3 January.

However, the company's alcohol-free Guinness stout alternative was recalled two weeks after its launch in November, due to “microbiological contamination.” The move was largely “precautionary,” the firm said.

Ritual Zero Proof already sells non-alcoholic gin, whiskey and tequila alternatives.

Meanwhile, many other brands, such as London-based Small Beer Brew, and Lucky Saint, offer selections of non-alcoholic beers, wines, ciders, lagers and spirits.

“The step change in product quality on offer is driving such huge interest in the no and low category,” Emma Heel, managing director of alcohol-free beer brand Lucky Saint, told the Guardian.

“We see dry January 2021 as a great opportunity for people to try these drinks to help them moderate their drinking and start the year in a positive way.”

Interest in no- or low-alcohol drinks has peaked since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic with nearly two in three (63%) UK adults trying these alternatives during 2020, according to research by regulatory alcohol body Portman Group.

What's more, a quarter of Brits even drink “nolo” alternatives regularly, the research found.

Sales of no- and low-alcohol drinks shot up 30% year-on-year in 2020, Nielsen Scantrack data shows.

“2020 has been a year like no other. Many of us have spent the year stressed, scared and tired,” Alcohol Change UK chief executive Dr Richard Piper, told the Guardian.

“When things get tough, we can find ourselves slipping into drinking habits we wish we could break, but Dry January can help.

“It’s our chance for a reset — 31 days to try something new, and to see some amazing benefits, like brighter skin, a fuller wallet, a calmer mind and a better night’s sleep.”

Dry January Will Be Wetter Than Ever - The Wall Street Journal

After a long year of canceled birthdays and postponed holiday gatherings, the world is more than ready to say goodbye to 2020.

Just not to the wine that got them through.

Wellness guru Cyndi Ramirez-Fulton, 35, has done January cleanses for years, giving up alcohol and other vices for the month to start the year. But the most temperate New Year’s tradition of all has been called off in her house: she won’t be going dry. “I think we should all be wary of the ‘new year, new you’ marketing push,” says Ramirez-Fulton, the founder and CEO of New York health spa Chillhouse. Instead of a booze-free fast, she’s planning on supporting her local wine shops and restaurants this January.

Dry January had been on the rise. The trend of abstaining from alcohol for a month first rose to popularity in the UK after an advocacy campaign to combat unhealthy drinking. One in 20 Britons participated in the month-long endeavor last year, says Alcohol Change UK, the charity that started the campaign.

This year, with many bars and restaurants still shuttered and events called off, drinkers who skipped a year of revelry see little reason to course-correct.

Thomas Crosse, 33, has participated in a total of seven Dry Januarys in past years. “By the time January comes, there’s a sense of guilt that I’ve overdone it,” he says.

By October of 2020, the Dublin-based radio presenter knew he would not be reprising his usual tradition. “Restaurants have been open and closed in Dublin every second month at this stage,” says Crosse. “If we want a nice wine with dinner or a beer watching some TV, then so be it.”

With Ireland set to go back into full lockdown in January, Crosse says he’ll be pairing his occasional nightly beverage with TV box sets and strolls around his home city.

“January will be doom and gloom,” he says. “So why not turn it into a positive and live your best life?”

As booze purveyors rushed this year to make online buying easier, stocking home bars jumped in popularity. Off-premise sales in the U.S., including those at wine shops or liquor stores, are up nearly a quarter as of September, according to Nielsen data, and the alcohol delivery company Drizly raised millions in funding to expand operations. Liz Paquette, Drizly’s director of brand, cites sales growth of more than 800 percent at the height of the “stocking-up” period, and sales have remained up 350 percent over 2019. Gift orders are also sixfold—a popular use of the delivery platform as people spend the holiday season away from loved ones, Paquette says.

SommSelect, an online wine shop and subscription service, says its customers are spending 25 percent more on average per order than they did in 2019.

If January resolutions will be wetter than average, the larger trend of more health-conscious alcohol may help ease the guilt—a group that includes lower ABV products, “clean” wines and wildly popular hard seltzers, which often advertise themselves as lower calorie or low-carb alternatives to other alcohols. Another 2020 winner? Hard Kombucha, which saw 2,122 percent year-over-year sales growth on Drizly.

“I don’t associate guilt with pleasure,” counters Autumn Brown, 37, a Minneapolis-based artist who hosts the podcast How to Survive the End of the World with her sister, Detroit-based writer Adrienne Maree Brown, 42.

“I have found [resolutions] to be based on a scarcity perspective:‘There is something wrong with me that needs to be fixed,’” her sister Adrienne says.

Alisha Ramos, 30, the founder of self-care-oriented newsletter and community Girls’ Night In, says Dry January and trends like it are too centered on outside pressure. Ramos often praises the joys of staying in, encouraging her community to think about New Year’s resolutions as self-investment rather than self-improvement.

“We are going through a global pandemic,” she says. “What we need right now is an investment in ourselves to take care of whatever we need at various moments—physical, social, emotional, mental.”

Not everyone is skipping the fad for a higher purpose.

“Just getting through the next four or five months or so—that’s all that’s gonna cut it,” says Brett Vergara, 28, a freelance UX program manager at Google who concedes that his sleep schedule did improve the last time he tried Dry January. Just not enough to do it again.

“Listen, if people can manage it in the midst of all this, my props to them,” says Vergara. “But while I’m holed up in my tiny apartment, I just don’t know if I can swing it this year.”

Denver weather: A dry and mild end to 2020 - The Denver Post

dry.indah.link

The start of 2021 will look a lot like 2020: mild and dry.

According to the National Weather Service, the chilly start to Wednesday will make way for a 43 degree high under sunny skies in Denver. With little wind or clouds, the remaining snow could melt. Temperatures will dip back down to 20 degrees in the metro area Wednesday night.

More sun and a 46 degree high is in the forecast for Thursday. Clouds will build throughout the day and evening, making for an overcast New Year’s Eve and a low of 23 degrees.

Sun will break the clouds to begin New Year’s Day on Friday with a high of 40 degrees. It should be a bluebird day in the hills for those trying to get a holiday run in. Temperatures will drop into the teens Friday night ahead of possible 50-degree days over the weekend.

WATCH: Breezy this afternoon before rain, freezing rain and snow arrive - WSYR

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV)-

WEDNESDAY:

Milder air is trying to return to Central New York Wednesday.

Closer to sunset is when we start to see some more significant precipitation. It begins east of Lake Ontario, it is warm enough for mainly rain showers closer to the shoreline. However, watch out for some freezing rain and snow along and east of I-81 and across the Tug Hill. Roads could be slick this evening, especially across higher elevations.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory which will be in effect from 1pm Wednesday to 4am Thursday.

END OF 2020 AND START OF 2021:

A cold front will zip through the area early Thursday morning so those Wednesday night rain showers end as some snow to start Thursday. Much of Thursday looks to be dry and cool with highs in the mid to upper 30s.

Right now, New Year’s Eve looks nice and quiet thanks to high pressure building in from the north. Temperatures should chill down into the 20s Thursday night as we ring in 2021.

A stronger storm system will come out of the Deep South and work west of CNY which will set us up for a mainly rain event starting Friday afternoon.

Precipitation likely begins as a little bit of a wintry mix, especially north and east of Syracuse but for the most part precipitation will fall in the form of rain Friday afternoon and night. Highs on New Year’s Day should be up near 40.

The Dry review – Eric Bana stars in gripping, tough and psychologically intense adaptation - The Guardian

dry.indah.link

Jane Harper’s best-selling novel The Dry is one of those books that feels written with a feature film adaptation in mind: a genre narrative (crime mystery-thriller) that’s pacey, plot-driven and full of dialogue, with a central location ripe for cinematic imagery. Extensive use of flashbacks is built into its structure, and they’re even presented in italics as if to say, “This is where the cuts and scene changes go”.

Director Robert Connolly’s adaptation is a very gripping and polished film, commandingly performed and directed, with an airtight sense of tonal cohesiveness – despite lots of, well, air in the frame, derived from countless mid- and long-shots capturing barren exterior locations in a fictitious Australian outback town. Written by Connolly and Harry Cripps, the script – like Harper’s book – hinges on dual mysteries: one concerning the recent and the other a distant past; both involving deaths that were potentially but not necessarily murders.

Binding the threads together is the protagonist Aaron Falk (Eric Bana), a Australian federal police agent who returns to his fictional hometown of Kiewarra following the apparent murder-suicide of his old friend Luke (Martin Dingle Wall), who it seems killed his wife and child before turning the gun on himself. Clipped introductory images show the aftermath of the incident, leading into location-establishing shots of the town presented in dusty yellowish tones that go on to define the film’s aesthetic.

By contrast, brief fleeting visions of Melbourne are rendered steely blue, with Bana doing that thing that actors often do when positioned in skyscrapers: staring pensively through the glass at the concrete jungle around them, with a look on his face that screams “I’m in deep thought”. (Is it possible, I wonder, for characters in dramas and thrillers to not be in deep thought when looking out a floor-to-ceiling window? Is it possible they’re just thinking “I’m hungry, is it time for lunch yet?”)

Falk hits the road, arriving at Kiewarra for his friend’s funeral, where the priest mentions a “devastating drought” – his eulogy placing The Dry in a context of Australian films that contemplate droughts (others include the 1920 silent film The Breaking of the Drought, John Heyer’s influential 1954 documentary The Back of Beyond, the Disneyified family movie Bushfire Moon and the recent A Sunburnt Christmas).

The dryness in Connolly’s film communicates that things could catch fire at any point: literally, given Kiewarra is a danger area for bushfires, but in other ways too – for instance the mental temperature of the locals, many of whom react in hostile ways to Falk’s presence.

The deceased man’s parents (Julia Blake and Bruce Spence) are convinced he didn’t do it and ask Falk to investigate. When he does accusations are thrown back at him relating to the unsolved death many years ago of Falk’s teenage friend Ellie (BeBe Bettencourt). Falk was implicated in her passing, with a general consensus among locals that he lied about his whereabouts on the day of her death. This is voiced throughout the film, shading the protagonist in interesting ways, making him a morally murky figure – far from a clearcut hero, and possibly, in relation to those past events, a legitimate suspect.

Falk soaks up the stories, attitudes and personalities of the townspeople, among them Sergeant Greg Raco (Keir O’Donnell), Ellie’s belligerent father Mal (William Zappa) and cousin Grant (Matt Nable), an uncooperative farmer (James Frecheville), the school principal (John Polson) and Falk’s longtime friend and sort-of love interest Gretchen (Genevieve O’Reilly). Bana’s performance delivers a morosely convincing take on the “bad cop” trope, his character also fleshed out through visions of a younger version of himself, played by Joe Klocek, in those regular jumps back to the past.

Connolly (whose oeuvre also includes Balibo, Paper Planes and the miniseries Barracuda) understands how heavily the novel relies on flashbacks – a very cinematic device – and calibrates the film accordingly. While flashbacks have literary and theatrical precedents, as Maureen Turim explained in her book Flashbacks in Film (which I plucked from my shelf after returning home from the screening), the term emerged only after the advent of cinema, which provided visceral and decisive new ways to, as Turim puts it, “return to a narrative past inserted in a narrative present”.

In this narrative past BeBe Bettencourt is very engaging as Ellie: personable but mysterious, relatable but ghost-like, navigating the outback and the schoolyard with a Picnic at Hanging Rock vibe, as a doomed teen with vaguely apparition-like qualities. All the supporting performances are bang on, adding a psychological intensity implied but not dictated by Stefan Duscio’s cinematography; despite the arid settings the real heat comes from the humans.

Harper’s book was skilfully constructed, but has a bit of an airport novel vibe, particularly towards the end – which, loaded with the inevitable red herrings and reveals, feels a little like a box-ticking exercise. The film remains rock solid throughout: taut, tough and tense, matching wide-open spaces with uncomfortably close drama.

It’s not the environment that terrorises, as it does in classics like Wake in Fright, but the people who move across it – with their hidden agendas, clashing motives and obscured pasts.

Forecast: A rainy night will lead to dry time on Wednesday - KOMU 8

dry.indah.link

We've successfully gotten through a wintry mix and now rain is set to fall through the night into Wednesday morning. This system will slowly push south throughout the day, leaving most areas north of I-70 dry for the better part of Wednesday. Areas south of I-70 will have a chance for lingering showers into the afternoon and a few flurries or a brief snow shower. Any snow that may accumulate is not expected to amount to more than a couple tenths of an inch.

Note that winds will also gust around 25 mph throughout the day from the northwest.

Temp. Graph Tomorrow.png

Therefore, no big issues are expected on Wednesday. Wooo!!

Total rainfall accumulations up to an inch are expected for most areas.

GOODBYE 2020

The year that shall not be named going forward will end with, what else, the chance for snow... and freezing rain.

The vast majority of Thursday will be dry. We may even see the sun! (WOW, I know!)

After 7pm, from the south, our final storm of 2020 and the first of 2021 will begin to move in. This will lead to evening snow or sleet showers which are expected to quickly change to freezing rain, if not start with freezing rain altogether.

NAM ADI 3km Precipcast.png

As the night progresses this freezing rain may intensify. The thing is, if it rains too heavily there isn't enough time for it to stick to anything and accumulate ice. Therefore, we may not end up with much ice. Please stay tuned as we track temperatures throughout the atmosphere for Thursday night over the coming days.

Regardless, travel concerns are certainly there for New Year's Eve festivities. Please be safe.

HELLO 2021

Any freezing rain before sunrise on Friday will change to rain as temps warm. Rain is expected to continue through much of the morning.

As we get more cold air in the afternoon, mainly north of I-70, we may see yet another precipitation switch, this time from rain to snow.

Areas north of I-70 may see snow in the afternoon and midday on Friday. It is too early to know accumulation potential, but accumulation is possible. We'll have a better idea tomorrow.

Event Details.png

SATURDAY SNOW, TOO??

Yes, another shortwave is looking more and more likely on Saturday which may bring a quick dusting to an inch of snow on Saturday during the day. Still plenty of time for this one to change, it's just a passing energy wave and can easily shift or run into drier air and fizzle, so please stay tuned.

WARMER WEATHER

Okay, if you want it, I've got it. Temperatures will once again go 10 to 15 degrees above average starting Sunday and continuing into the first full week of January. That means highs in the 40s and 50s and lows in the 30s.

Dry but colder the next few days, before a wet start to 2021 - WFMZ Allentown

dry.indah.link
SHORT TERM FORECAST

TUESDAY: Mostly Sunny.  Breezy.  Afternoon: Mid 30s.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear, Moonlit Skies. Low: 18.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly Sunny.  A Little Breezy.  High: 38.

FORECAST SUMMARY

Yesterday, it was mild in the low 50s.  Some people were even walking around without a coat!

Well, they won't be today.  We stay this cold all day: our temperatures stay steady through the afternoon.

It stays windy until sunset.  At sunset, we'll quickly lose the wind.

Then, you'll see a clear, moonlit sky.  Tonight is the full moon.  With those clear skies and that then calm wind, our temperatures drop into the teens.

We're sunny again on Wednesday, but it's still chilly in the 30s.  It's less windy tomorrow, but there will still be a breeze.

Then, we've updated your New Year's Eve and New Year's Day forecast. It's now chillier both days with highs only in the 40s.

Thursday now looks drier.  We'll have only a few showers on Thursday, mainly in the afternoon. It's dry in the nighttime, including at midnight.

On Friday, we start the morning dry.

Later in the morning, after the morning commute, some freezing rain arrives.  This will cause a glaze of ice on the sidewalks and trees and make some roads slippery.  The freezing rain wraps up after lunch.

After lunch, we'll have enough mild air to warm the air so the rain won't freeze on contact with the ground anymore.

Then, it gets pretty rainy and windy in the afternoon, and the rain continues for most of the night. We'll grab an inch of rain by the end of the night.

The rain wraps up first thing on Saturday.  It's over by sunrise.

You'll see sunny skies Saturday afternoon and those highs in the 50s we promised you!

The 40s return on Sunday and the sunshine continues.  Sunshine and highs close to 40 continue for much of the first full week of the new year.

I took a peek ahead to mid January.  There are no snowstorms in the forecast through mid January.

Two and a half weeks is about as far out as we can look for reliable forecasts.  Once you get past ten days, you can only forecast trends like colder or warmer than average.  Temperatures are close to average or above average through mid January.

Rick Houser: I will wash and you dry - The Clermont Sun

dry.indah.link

I really am not sure just why this topic came into mind other than, I walked through the kitchen and noticed that the dirty dishes were in the sink and I then remembered that it was my turn to wash them. For my entire life no matter where I have lived the sinks in the kitchen were two basins. From my earliest thought about this area of the kitchen the dirty dishes went in the left side and then washed, they were then placed into the basin on the right side. There the dishes were to be rinsed off and then the item that had been washed and rinsed was dried with a dishtowel and set over on the table to be ready to be put away.

Clermont County’s Rick Houser has released a second book, this one titled “Memories from the Heart.”

Now all of that sounds simple enough now doesn’t it? The thing about washing the dishes is almost nobody really wants to do them. I don’t care how you slice it doing the dishes is just plain no fun. As best as I can recall doing the dishes might have been the most fun that they ever were when my sister Peg and brother Ben got the duty of cleaning them after every evening meal. I assume that part of why it looked like fun to me was my siblings were at the sink together and wherever they were so then was I. Being young at that time I am sure that since they were doing them it must have been fun or they wouldn’t have. (I had overlooked the part where my mom had assigned this chore to them.)

As I got older, I learned the difference between wanting to do something and something being assigned. My mom was a very busy housewife as most are and she had two good children that could be of help to her and therefore they were assigned this duty and it was so done swiftly and to the point where it was well understood by both of them. Now my siblings were creative in how they handled chores of this nature. This was back in the ‘50s and in those days and until I think recently the music industry had a top twenty list of the hottest songs that would be played to the listeners. Popularity I think was from the amount of sales a record was doing. So at that time if Elvis had a song out on the charts the odds were pretty good that song would be near or at the top of popularity.

Our evening meals were at five o’clock regularly and by the time the meal was over and the dishes begun we were getting into about 5:30. So as the water was being drawn up in the sink one of them would turn on the radio to WSAI and loud enough so they could hear the top ten on the chart that was presented every night. I know as the sink was filling and the air was filling with music Peg and Ben would look to each other and one would say you wash and I’ll dry or vice versa. Once this was decided the time was sped up as they would debate with each other as to just which song was going to move up or down the chart that night and which was going to be the number one hit. Even though my parents really didn’t care for the new rock and roll music they said nothing as the music helped them get the job done it was a small price to pay. (Happy kids happy helpers)

I really enjoyed this as I was in a room with Peg and Ben and we all seemed to be getting along and handling the chore as smoothly as it could be handled. Of course they grew up and moved away and I guess they just did their own dishes then. I then got drafted by mom and of course since I was the youngest mom took a softer approach with me I think as If I had a good excuse I could escape drying dishes. Later on in my life my cousin Walt and I batched and for five years, we had to do our own dishes and decide who would wash and who would dry. The thing with us was I guess since we were a pair of boys and neither one of us really liked doing dishes so when we did the dishes wasn’t very often.

Sometimes the sinks would overflow with dishes silverware and glasses. I know that one time we waited until we had to wash 78 water glasses. In addition, that didn’t count plates and such.

When I got married, my wife and I would wash the dishes and I must admit I wasn’t too much good help either. Fortunately, we had a daughter and as soon as she could, I let her take my spot with the reason that it was good for a daughter to be near her mother when doing chores. I doubt very much she bought that but I would find something to work on after supper.

As all three of us, kids moved out into the big ole world to clean our own dishes my parents had moved over to the edge of Bethel and even though mom had a dishwasher she still placed the dishes on the left side and rinsed them on the right. After meals with just the two of them mom washed and dad dried and placed the dishes away. However on a Sunday or a holiday or big event where Peg, Ben and myself would be there mom would somehow move us into the kitchen and ask the question. Who wants to dry the dishes and put them away? She asks this question as she was handing each of us a dishtowel. It was premeditated! As daughter in laws arrived in the family, they got the pleasure to dry dishes also. During all of this, my dad would set in his recliner and if we looked at him, he would point blank say I did my dishes all week. And then smile largely.

Our children have all grown and now have their own dishes, this leaves my wife and I to wash ours.

We have arrived at the way is to take turns as she does them one day and then me. In addition, since there is just the two of us there are much less dishes to be concerned about and we have solved an answer to the age old question of who will wash and who will dry. When it becomes our turn the duties are ours alone and gone is the argument. We are good at making these big decisions .
